RESOURCES

There are plenty of ways for Red Hook residents to get involved in school District 15

Community Education Councils, created by the New York State Legislature, are the local bodies responsible for ensuring that parents and the public have input in educational decision making at the school district level.

There are 32 CECs and 4 City-Wide Councils in New York City, one for each school district. They work with elementary and middle schools in their district. CECs operate independently of the New York City Department of Education, and act as liaisons between the public and DOE. All CEC members are volunteers.

CEC15 is made up of 11 members, nine elected (including one IEP parent and one ELL parent) and two appointed by the Brooklyn Borough President. The CEC15 conducts at least two monthly meetings, which, are always open to the public. Comments from the community on educational issues are welcomed at the monthly Calendar Meetings. If you can, attend a CEC meeting. Many provide child care and something to eat.

Community Education Council District 15 (CEC15) reviews education policies and advocates for high quality education that benefits all of our public elementary and middle school students in District 15. Independent of the Department of Education, though sometimes the DOE attends meetings to gain input from the community.

Here's an overview of CEC duties:

  • Hold monthly public meetings with the superintendent to discuss the state of schools in the district;

  • Review the district’s educational programs and assess their effect on student achievement

  • Approve zoning lines as submitted by the superintendent

  • Liaise with School and District Leadership Teams

  • Hold hearings on the Capital Plan and prioritize requests for capital improvements in district schools

  • Participate in Joint Public Hearings on school closings and co-locations

  • Submit an annual evaluation of the superintendent to the chancellor

  • Host Chancellor’s Town Halls for their districts

STAY IN THE LOOP

Keeping track of every event is hard. But, the Department of Education has a handy searchable calendar tool on their website to help you keep track of events that are important to you. For example, if you want to know when the next public meeting on special education is, you can check off the public meeting and special education categories to narrow down the DOE events to find one you're looking for.
